1. Understanding PV Wire Types

Two main types of wires are used in PV systems:

PV DC Cable: This is a specialized cable for PV systems. It acts like a "protective suit" designed for outdoor environments. Typically manufactured using irradiation cross-linking technology, it offers excellent weather resistance (resists -40°C cold and up to 120°C heat), UV resistance, ozone resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, ensuring reliable operation for over 25 years even in extreme weather.

AC Wire: Used to connect the inverter to the grid or household loads, this is standard building wire. The key is to select a product that complies with local electrical codes based on load power, and it should generally have at least Class C flame retardancy.


2. Wire Size and Selection Criteria

The most critical parameters when selecting a wire are cross-sectional area (thickness) and voltage rating.

Cross-sectional area (mm² / AWG): Determines the current-carrying capacity. A larger cross-section can carry more current but costs more and is harder to install. Selection depends on two factors:

System current: The primary factor. High-power modules or parallel strings generate higher current, requiring thicker cables.

Cable length: An often overlooked factor. Cables have resistance, and the longer the cable, the greater the energy loss due to voltage drop.

Key Design Rule: Control Voltage Drop
According to national standard GB50797-2012, voltage drop must be strictly limited to ensure system efficiency:

DC side: Voltage drop should not exceed 2%.

AC side: Voltage drop should not exceed 3%.

Example: If the DC operating voltage is 600 V, a 2% drop equals 12 V. If the module current is 13 A and using 4 mm² cable (approx. 4.6 mΩ/m), the distance from the farthest panel to the inverter should be no more than about 120 meters. Beyond that, upgrade to 6 mm² cable (approx. 3.1 mΩ/m).

Voltage Rating
Ensure the cable's rated voltage is not less than the system's maximum voltage. Common ratings of 1000 V DC / 1500 V DC meet the requirements of most residential and commercial projects.


3. Key International Standards

To ensure quality and safety, always select cables that comply with major international standards and check the markings on the cable jacket. The global PV market primarily follows these standards:

Environmental isolation: In areas prone to rodent damage or mechanical impact, use conduit for protection.

Proper connections: Keep connectors (e.g., MC4) dry and clean. Listen for a "click" to ensure full mating; otherwise, arcing may occur, posing a fire risk.
