KVVP22 / KYJVP22 Steel Tape Armoured Control Cable Standard: GB/T 9330. Construction: Shielded control core + steel tape armour + PVC outer sheath. Application: Direct burial, underground instrument circuits, trenches with rock and mechanical damage risk.
LSZH Control Cable Standard: IEC 61034, IEC 60332. Construction: Copper / XLPE / LSZH sheath. Low smoke, no toxic halogen gas during fire. Application: Tunnels, underground stations, data centres, shipboard and public infrastructure.
What Is Control Cable?
Control cable is a multi-core copper electrical cable designed to transmit low-voltage control signals, feedback signals, interlock commands and instrument signals between controllers, sensors, actuators, contactors and protection devices.
Core performance features:
Main conductor: 99.99% oxygen-free copper for stable resistance and reliable signal transmission.
Common rated voltage: 450/750V; some heavy-duty types 0.6/1kV.
Multi-core options: 2 cores, 3 cores, 4 cores, 7 cores, 10 cores, 14 cores, 19 cores, 24 cores, 37 cores and custom core counts.
Colour or numbered core identification for easy field termination.
Shield option: Copper braid shielding suppresses EMI and crosstalk, preventing signal drift or false triggering in noisy industrial environments.
Armour option: Steel tape armour for underground and mechanically exposed routes.
Control cables are selected when projects need: Signal integrity + interlock safety + panel automation wiring + anti-interference instrument transmission

1. IEC 60227 / GB/T 9330 Non-Shielded Control Cable (KVV / KYJV)
KVV and KYJV are the baseline fixed control cables for low-noise indoor cabinet and cable tray installation. They are widely used for simple relay interlock, indicator light wiring and non-critical feedback loops.
KVV uses PVC insulation, lower cost, suitable for normal ambient temperature. KYJV uses XLPE insulation, higher continuous operating temperature, better ageing resistance, preferred for power plants and chemical facilities.
Non-shielded control cables cannot replace shielded cables in high EMI areas. If routed together with VFD power cables, shielded versions must be specified.
2. Shielded Control Cable (KVVP / KYJVP) – Anti-EMI for Instrument & DCS
Shielded control cable is the most demanded type for industrial automation. The copper braid shield layer blocks electromagnetic interference from power cables, motors and frequency converters, avoiding signal jitter, wrong feedback and system shutdown.
Shielding should be single-ended grounded according to the automation system design to prevent ground loop current.
Common search keywords for shielded control cable: shielded control cable, instrument control cable, DCS signal cable, PLC control cable, copper braid control cable
3. Flexible Control Cable KVVR / KVVRP
Class 5 fine-stranded copper conductors give excellent bending performance. KVVRP is the shielded flexible variant. These are used for cabinet door wiring, hinged panels, moving machinery and equipment where repeated bending occurs. They are not designed for direct burial unless combined with armour.
4. Armoured Control Cable KVVP22 / KYJVP22
Steel tape armoured control cables add mechanical protection against crushing, piercing and rodent damage. They are specified for direct burial, concrete encasement, cable trenches without protection covers, mining and outdoor industrial sites.
Armoured control cable outer diameter and bending radius are larger than non-armoured versions; gland and duct sizing must be checked before installation.
5. LSZH Low Smoke Zero Halogen Control Cable
For public safety critical locations, LSZH control cable releases minimal smoke and no corrosive halogen fumes during combustion. It is required for tunnels, underground utility corridors, subway stations, large commercial buildings and data centre control wiring. Flame retardant and fire-resistant grades are available on request.
Control Cable vs Power Cable – Important Engineering Difference
Many buyers confuse control cable and small power cable:
Purpose: Control cable transfers control/feedback signals; power cable delivers working current to loads.
Core count: Control cables usually have many small cores (7,10,14,19,24,37 cores); power cables normally 2,3,4,5 cores.
Shielding: Shielding is very common for control cables, rare for general power cables.
Voltage: Standard control cable rating is 450/750V, not designed for main power feeder.
Termination: Control cable cores connect to terminal blocks, relays and instrument headers; power cables connect to breakers and heavy loads.
Direct substitution is not allowed without approval from the automation or electrical engineer.
How to Select Control Cable
Selection checklist:
Voltage Rating
450/750V covers almost all instrument and PLC control circuits; select 0.6/1kV only for heavy-duty interlock systems.
Conductor Cross-section
0.5mm² / 0.75mm² for low-current signal; 1.0mm² /1.5mm² standard for most control loops; 2.5mm² and above for higher interlock current.
Core Quantity
Match the I/O list of PLC / DCS, reserve spare cores as project standard.
Interference Level
Normal indoor cabinet → unshielded KVV/KYJV. Near motors, VFD, high-power cables → KVVP / KYJVP shielded.
Installation Route
Cable tray indoor: non-armoured. Direct burial, concrete, high mechanical risk: armoured 22 type. Moving parts: flexible KVVRP. Tunnel / public building fire safety: LSZH.
Environmental Resistance
Tinned copper for humid, corrosive chemical environments.
KVV vs KYJV vs KVVP vs KVVP22
| Model | Construction | Main Application |
|---|---|---|
| KVV | PVC insulated unshielded | Indoor tray, low interference control |
| KYJV | XLPE insulated unshielded | High temperature, power plant control |
| KVVP | PVC + copper braid shield | PLC, instrument, anti-interference signal |
| KVVP22 | KVVP + steel tape armour | Buried instrument control cable |
Control Cable Ordering Format
Standard ordering format: Core number × cross-section mm² + Voltage + Model Examples: 14×1.5mm² 450/750V KVVP 24×0.75mm² 450/750V KYJV 7×2.5mm² 450/750V KVVP22 10×1.0mm² 450/750V KVVRP
Insulation, Sheath, Shield & Armour
1.PVC: Economic, general industrial use, temperature limited.
2.XLPE: Higher thermal rating, better electrical performance, chemical resistance.
3.LSZH: Low smoke zero halogen for fire safety zones.
4.Copper braid shield: Standard shielding, coverage ≥85%.
Steel tape armour (STA): Crush and puncture protection for buried routes.
Installation & Termination Guidance
Follow minimum bending radius per cable model; flexible types allow tighter bend.
Separate control cables from power cables where possible. If routed together, shielded control cable is required.
Shield layer single-end grounding is the common practice for DCS and instrument systems; avoid double grounding unless specified.
Use suitable cable glands, terminal blocks and cable markers for clear core identification.
Armoured control cable armour must be earthed properly.
Inspection & Quality Control
| Inspection Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Conductor Resistance Test | Verify copper purity and cross-section compliance |
| High Voltage Withstand Test | Insulation integrity check |
| Insulation Resistance Test | Confirm insulation performance |
| Shield Coverage Test | For braided shield control cable |
| Dimensional Inspection | Insulation thickness, sheath thickness, outer diameter |
| Visual & Marking Check | Core colour/number printing, outer sheath marking |
| Flame / Smoke Test | LSZH and flame-retardant grades |
| Third-Party Witness Inspection | Project acceptance |
Why Conductor Resistance & Shield Coverage Matter
Poor-quality control cable uses impure copper or thin braid shielding. The result is unstable signals, random faults and hard-to-diagnose automation downtime. Visual inspection cannot judge quality. Full traceability path: Copper rod → Production batch → Factory test report → Drum marking → Sampling test → Delivery → Site acceptance
